Pirate is being re-engined with Cummins Quantum Series QSB 5.9 turbo charged diesel engines. The full specification and data can be found on this link.
The new engines are being installed by C. J. Broom and Sons Limited at Brundall Norfolk who are the longest established builder of Power Boats in Great Britain.
We choose Brooms for their enviable reputation for quality work and because they already have experience in replacing engines on a similar boat build by Brooke Marine. Their team is already expressing enthusiasm for getting on with the task and we anticipate a final outcome fully "fit for purpose!".
The engines will be linked to ZF gearboxes of 1.86:1 ratio driving through R & D flexible couplings to Duplex stainless shafts to 23 x 26.5 four-blade Hamble propellers.
The estimated top speed is 31.5 knots at 2800 rpm.
Both David Johnson the Marine Business Manager and Cummins UK have been extremely helpful with regard to the re-engine project and have taken a very pro-active stance with regard to our participation in the race including offers of assistance before and during the event itself and we wish to express our gratitude to them. Without their support, advice and assistance it is unlikely that we could have considered putting units of such quality and performance in the boat.
Once they are installed and commissioned we would be very happy to answer questions or even demonstrate the engines to anyone considering a similar re-engine project.
We will keep this site updated as work progresses.
